We are grateful for the support and dedication of our team, clients, and partners who have been part of this incredible journey.

Staff Spotlight

Name: Alexander Simpson

Job Title: Senior Associate, UK and European Patent Attorney.

Role as Diversity and Inclusion Officer: I organise team D&I training and share relevant resources. I’ve learnt a lot in this role and have particularly enjoyed engaging with IP Inclusive, who do a wonderful job promoting diversity and inclusion within the IP field.

How did you get into the profession? I was researching my career options during the final year of my engineering degree. I knew I wanted to stay within STEM but wasn’t sure if I wanted to start an engineering graduate role. I came across the patent attorney profession and it sounded like an interesting mix of science and law (it is!). Almost ten years later, I’m still learning new things every day.

Favourite Brand: IKEA.

Favourite Invention: The Brompton folding bike.

What do you like to do outside of work? I enjoy travelling, cycling and keeping fit. I recently completed my first trail half marathon in hilly Northumberland. I’ve since signed up for five trail races this year, so it’s safe to say I’m hooked.

What have you read, watched, or listened to recently that you enjoyed? I recently enjoyed the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown.

What type of clients do you like working with? I enjoy working with clients who are passionate about their technology and its potential to make a positive impact.

Celebrating Our Earthshot Prize Nominees

We are proud to announce that two of Definition IP’s clients have been nominated for the prestigious Earthshot Prize in 2025! Both NEG8 Carbon Limited and Origin Technology Limited received nominations from the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys for their groundbreaking work. NEG8 Carbon’s electrostatic direct air capture (DAC) technology significantly reduces the costs of DAC, paving the way for widespread adoption. Meanwhile, Origin Technology has developed an innovative solution to prevent and repair water leakage from water mains and pipelines, greatly reducing water waste.

Funding Success for Newcells Biotech

Our client, Newcastle-based biotechnology company Newcells Biotech, has successfully secured further funding. This financial boost will help them continue their pioneering development of lab-based models to accelerate drug development.  Congratulations to the Newcells team on this significant achievement!

Advancing Carbon Literacy

In staff news, we are excited to share that Helena Peat is working with Earthology to obtain her Carbon Literacy Certificate. As Definition’s sustainability lead, Helena’s new knowledge will be invaluable, and we look forward to putting some of her learning into practice to further our commitment to sustainability.  She will join Eimear Sampson who obtained the Carbon Literacy Certificate in 2023.

IP Top Tip

Before sharing any new innovation, it’s crucial to make an active decision about how you want to protect it. Taking this step ensures you have options, such as filing patent or registered design application(s), keeping it as a trade secret, or even opting for a defensive publication. Making this decision up front can safeguard your intellectual property and preserve its value. Don’t hesitate to reach out to one of our team members for advice on how to make the best decision for your innovation.
